2006-2008 Toyota RAV4 Keyless Entry Remote Transmitters (Keyhead)

As early as the 1990s, vehicle manufacturers incorporated security into keys so that a vehicle would not start unless the key used in the ignition “matched” a key that the system had been programmed to recognize. Since then, “transponders” have become widespread (though not yet universal) in keys and proximity remote transmitters. During this progression, and even still today, some manufacturers have offered keys with transponders as part of an optional anti-theft security package. This means that, for a given model year, there are both vehicles with transponder keys and those with keys having no transponder. This practice sometimes carries over to keys that have remote transmitters built into the keyhead, such those used on many Toyota vehicles during the past decade.

An example of this is the keyhead remote transmitters used on Toyota RAV4 vehicles from 2006 through 2008. Some vehicles were equipped with an antitheft system. Those vehicles used a keyhead transmitter with OE part number 89070-42660 or 89070-42540. If you open up the keyhead case, you will see the transponder sitting in a slot at the edge of the case. Other 2006-2008 RAV4s had no anti-theft system. These vehicles used a keyhead transmitter with OE part number 89070-42670 or 89070-42550. The two parts are identical from the outside except for a differentiating mark on the keyblade. These two keyhead remote transmitter parts were not used on any other Toyota vehicles.

These are the kinds of practices of vehicle manufacturers that cause us to have to carry a thousand different remotes in our inventory. Oh well, it’s a business.
