Replacement Remote Key Fobs for 2001 GM Trucks and SUVs

We received an inquiry today from a customer looking for a replacement remote transmitter for his 2001 Chevy S10 pickup truck. For most vehicles, specifying a replacement keyfob is very straightforward. But for most GM trucks and SUVs, 2001 was a split year in which two different keyless entry systems were used during the model year. This means that a customer must know either the production month of their vehicle or information from their original remote transmitter in order to be certain they are buying the correct replacement part.

For the 1st build of 2001 trucks and SUVs — those built through February 2001 — GM installed a keyless entry system that used either a 3-button or 4-button remote with FCC ID KOBUT1BT. The correct replacement remote for trucks, which used the 3-button keyfob, is Remotes Unlimited part 517-1517. See this part at this link.

For the 2nd build — trucks and SUVs built from March 2001 on — GM used a different keyless entry system that used remotes with FCC ID KOBLEAR1XT. The correct replacement remote for trucks, which used the 3-button keyfob, is Remotes Unlimited part 514-1514. See this part at this link.

If you look at both links, you will see that the remotes look very similar. So, if you are buying a replacement remote, be cautious about buying based on matching the visual characteristics of the keyfob. Match the FCC ID on your original remote or use the production month of your vehicle to be sure you buy the right part.

Both of the factory keyless entry systems installed in the 2001 model year are user programmable, so customers will be able to add a new remote for their vehicle without having to go to a dealership.
