2006-2008 Toyota RAV4 Keyless Entry Remote Transmitters

A question came up the other day with respect to Toyota RAV4 keyless entry remotes from 2006 until now. A customer had purchased a keyhead remote for their 2007 Toyota RAV4 Limited online from another company and, when they took it to a Toyota dealership for programming, they were told it was the wrong part for their vehicle.

Well, if you do not know it by now, you have to be careful when buying a replacement car remote. Not all may be as it seems.

For 2006, 2007 and 2008, Toyota RAV4 vehicles used one of two keyhead remotes. By “keyhead” remote, I mean a part which has the remote transmitter integrated with the key. All RAV4s came with keyless entry as standard equipment during this period. However, anti-theft was not standard on all vehicles. It was standard equipment on Toyota RAV4 Limiteds but not on the Base and Sport models of the RAV4 from 2006 through 2008.

The two keyhead remotes look almost identical from the outside. The important difference in the parts is that the one for vehicles with an anti-theft system has a transponder inserted into the keyhead case. You can search the Remotes Unlimited website for a 2008 Toyota RAV4 if you want to see an image showing the transponder.

Anyway, the customer had received a keyhead remote part that was for vehicles without an anti-theft system (Toyota part 89070-42670). They needed the anti-theft keyhead part (Toyota part 89070-42660). We wish buying a replacement car remote was easy but, in many situations, it just isn’t.

We do have the replacement remote transmitter with blank key blades for 2008 Toyota RAV4 vehicles. We just need to know whether or not your vehicle is equipped with the anti-theft feature. This can be determined by whether or not there is a transponder in your original remote. To see how to find the transponder or not see the picture below on where it is located in your original remote:

I bought a 2008 RAV4 Limited. It appears that I have the anti theft feature. The dealer wants $350 for a new key with the chip. The manual says I need the key number (don’t have) and the master key. It also appears I have the engine immobilizer system. Can I get a replacement?

      Hi Phil,

Toyota RAV4 vehicles for this year included some with anti-theft systems and some without. The keyhead parts for these two situations are different. All Limited submodel vehicles have anti-theft as standard equipment. Base (“X”) and Sport sub-models may or may not have an anti-theft system.
If you have your original keyhead part, you can tell the difference because vehicles with anti-theft systems have a transponder inside the keyhead case and an “O” stamped on the key blade.

Hello David, thanks for contacting us. Here is a link to purchase a replacement remote for your 2006 Toyota RAV4 (Base Trim Model).

This remote will require a “scan tool” for programming. This can be done by a dealer or a locksmith. Generally, locksmiths tend to be cheaper. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at toll-free 877-719-1900
