Buying the Right Replacement Remote Control

Some people may think buying a replacement remote control for the factory keyless entry system of their car, truck or SUV is a no-brainer. But this is not always the case. In many, many cases, more than one type of keyless entry system was installed on a vehicle in the same model year.

For instance, say you want a replacement remote for 2000 GMC Yukon. Three different remotes were used on Yukons for this model-year, RUI parts 136-1136, 137-1137 and 517-1517. Two of the three keyfobs are compatible, but the third is not interchangeable with the other two. To buy the correct remote, you must specify the sub-model of the vehicle (Yukon Denali used a different system than Yukon SLT, SLE or XL in 2000) or specify the remote by the FCC ID number or GM part number on your original remote.

Again in 2001, more than one type of system was used on GMC Yukon vehicles. In this case, the split is based on when the vehicle was assembled – through February 2001 (Design 1) or after that (Design 2). In this case, the sub-model does not matter, but the production date does. As with 2000 Yukons, you can assure accurate specification by searching by the FCC ID number or part number on the back of your original remote.
