Exercise Caution When Searching For a Remote By FCC ID

A website visitor recently inquired about replacing an aftermarket alarm system keyfob with FCC ID “h83lec-8r”. Remotes Unlimited does not have a record of that number on a transmitter. However, H83LEC8R is a valid FCC ID for a receiver.

It is important to understand that car alarm remote transmitters and receivers are different electronically – one sends signals and the other receives them – so they generally do not have the same FCC ID. That’s why, when searching for a replacement aftermarket alarm system remote, you need to follow this rule:

If you have an original remote, look on the back of the case and search by the FCC ID number or the manufacturer’s part number (if their is one); if you do not have an original remote, search by brand and model information (and not FCC information) off of the receiver (control module) in the vehicle.
