Re-Programming Keyless Entry Remotes

A blog reader recently asked about re-programming a certain proximity remote. (Our tech staff will respond to that reader directly on Monday with an answer to the question.) My purpose here is to address the general case.

Most keyless entry remote transmitters, but not all, are re-programmable. The “programming” process is what enables a remote to be used with compatible systems. Programming generally involves a change only to memory in the control module (receiver) of the keyless entry system located in the vehicle and thus has no effect at all on the transmitter. In fact, assuming it is properly programmed, the transmitter could conceivably be used with more than one vehicle. This might be a little confusing though. If you had two vehicles that used the same keyless entry transmitter and you programmed both systems to accept the remote then, when you pressed a button on the remote, you might end up unlocking or locking the doors of both cars without meaning to do so.
