Caution About FCC ID Searches When Buying a Replacement Car Remote

It is important to be a little bit careful when you are searching for a replacement remote by FCC ID number. The companies that develop factory keyless entry systems and aftermarket alarm systems and then register there technology with the FCC are not particularly creative when they assign ID numbers to their registrations. It is pretty common for them to use sequential numbers for IDs.

So, for instance, Calsonic Kansei, who is the FCC Registrant on several Nissan keyless entry remotes, registered parts with FCC IDs KBRASTU09, KBRASTU10 and KBRASTU15. Then, as if to be both ironic and cruel to those of us who are dyslexic, their next FCC ID was KBRASTU51.

In the “rational naming” world, when items are going to be searched, we try to stay away from characters that are easily confused, such as “0” and “O”, “5” and “S”, or “1”, “I” and lower case “L”. Unfortunately, most RF engineers either don’t think along these lines or are too cruel to care.

On the Remotes Unlimited website, we sometimes post a caution message telling people to be careful because the FCC ID they entered is very close to one or more other FCC IDs and could easily have been confused, especially when the number is practically worn off of the keyfob case.

Now here is some advice: look at the image of the remote you are buying carefully and apply some common sense about whether you think it could be the correct replacement for the part you have. This is such an obvious thing to advise, you probably think I am an idiot for even putting it in print. But, believe me, you would be surprised how many people buy a replacement remote from a different car manufacturer than the vehicle they drive. So, if you drive a GM vehicle and a website tells you the replacement part is made by Chrysler, be a little bit skeptical.
