Keyless Entry Remote Programming

Replacement keyfobs must be programmed before they will work with the factory keyless entry system on your vehicle. More accurately, the system must be programmed to accept the new transmitter.

There are two basic cases regarding programming. Either the system must be programmed by connecting a computer “scan tool” device and then sending a message via software to allow a new transmitter to be added to the system. Or the system can be programmed through a series of actions that the vehicle owner can perform. We in the industry refer to this as user programming or on-board programming.

There are a wide variety of methods for carrying out user programming. Some are easier than others.

One nuance of programming a new remote to your keyless entry system is that it may make your old remote controls inoperable. Car manufacturers figure that, if you are adding a new remote, it may be because your old remote was stolen and you do not want that remote to continue working. So, whenever you program a new car remote, be sure to have all of the remotes for that vehicle with you so that you can program the old ones to continue working as well.
