Determining If Your Vehicle Has A Factory Keyless Entry System

A recent contact inquiry was received from a reader who just purchased a used vehicle. She received no remotes with the vehicle, but she believes it may have a factory keyless entry system. In this specific case, it was a 2002 Chevrolet truck.

Some models have factory keyless entry as standard equipment. In those cases, answering this type of question is easy. But many models, even today, offer factory keyless entry as optional equipment, especially on the base package of non-luxury vehicles.

If the factory keyless entry system for a given model is user programmable, the easiest way to determine if a specific vehicle has factory keyless entry is by going through the programming steps and seeing if the car or truck responds as if it has gone into programming mode. That is what we advised the owner of the 2002 Chevy truck to do.

Another option is to call a local dealer, give them the VIN (vehicle identification number) of your vehicle, and ask them whether or not the vehicle was equipped with factory keyless entry.
