Did You Know? . . . Not All Factory Keyless Entry Remotes with the Same FCC ID Are Interchangeable

We recently had an inquiry from an individual who had an Ungo remote control with the same FCC ID that appears on some DEI keyfobs used on Viper and other aftermarket alarm systems. He wanted to know if that meant he could replace his remote with one of the Viper remotes since Ungo replacement remotes are no longer made and are very difficult to locate.

Unfortunately for that visitor, the answer is no. And more generally, the answer is that there are many cases where remote transmitters have the same FCC ID and are not interchangeable. In fact, the only reference identifier that appears widely on remote controls and leads to a definitive specification in every case that we know of is an OE part number. So, if you are looking to buy a replacement car or truck remote, be cautious about what reference information you use for searching and be sure you are shopping with a credible web seller.
