Many people do not realize that, under the right circumstances, they can replace a 3-button remote with a 4-button remote. The 4th button (usually a rear function button) may not have any effect, but the lock, unlock and panic buttons will still work just as on their original remote.
One of these circumstances is the 3-button and 4-button remotes with FCC ID GQ43VT17T made by Chrysler for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep cars, trucks, vans and SUVs. These keyfobs were used on a bunch of vehicles during the first half of the last decade, before Chrysler started using those big, ugly, consumer-unfriendly keyhead remote transmitters.
See both FCC ID GQ43VT17T remotes at this link.
Chrysler factory keyless entry systems that use either of these remotes are user programmable to add a replacement keyfob. However, unlike most other vehicle manufacturers, Chrysler chose not to use a working key as the sole requirement for completing on board programming of a new remote with these systems. Instead, to program one of these remotes, you must have a working remote available. Otherwise, the system requires dealership programming.
